What is Ekterly?

Ekterly is the first oral on-demand treatment approved for HAE attacks. As a plasma kallikrein inhibitor taken by mouth at attack onset, it eliminates the need for injection or IV administration during an acute attack — an important advance for patients who want a portable, easy-to-administer rescue option. Oral on-demand treatment is a meaningful change in how HAE attacks can be managed.

What it treats

Ekterly is FDA-approved for the following indications:

  • Treatment of acute HAE attacks in adult and pediatric patients ≥12 years

How it is administered

Ekterly is taken orally at the first sign of an attack, with a repeat dose available if symptoms persist. Patients are typically prescribed multiple doses for home stocking. Even with oral on-demand therapy, every patient with HAE should have a written acute-attack plan and access to emergency care for severe or laryngeal attacks.

Patient assistance & support

The manufacturer offers a patient support program — KalVista Patient Services — that can help with insurance navigation, copay assistance for eligible patients, nursing support, and ongoing education. More information is available at https://www.ekterly.com.

Coordination at Optimed Immunology

Treatment with Ekterly is initiated and monitored by Dr. McNeil. Prior authorizations are handled in-house — patients are not asked to navigate insurance approvals on their own. This is an oral medication, dispensed through your preferred pharmacy or a specialty pharmacy partner depending on insurance coverage. The team coordinates the prescription and follows up to confirm the medication has been received.

A note on age: The FDA indications above may include pediatric or adolescent age groups. Optimed Immunology's clinical practice is focused on adults. If you are seeking care for a minor, please contact the office and we can advise on referral options.
