What is Hizentra?

Hizentra is a 20% subcutaneous immunoglobulin product from CSL Behring — one of the most widely used SCIG products in the U.S. Its high concentration allows smaller infusion volumes, and its room-temperature storage simplifies travel and daily life.

What it treats

Hizentra is FDA-approved for the following indications:

  • Primary humoral immunodeficiency
  • Maintenance therapy in CIDP

How it is administered

Hizentra is administered subcutaneously, typically weekly, via self-infusion at home using a small portable pump. Patients are trained on the technique by an infusion nurse and can administer doses independently within a few sessions. Some patients dose every two weeks once stable. The route allows more stable IgG levels and avoids the systemic side effects sometimes seen with IVIG.

Patient assistance & support

The manufacturer offers a patient support program — CSL Behring IgIQ Patient Support — that can help with insurance navigation, copay assistance for eligible patients, nursing support, and ongoing education. More information is available at https://www.igiq.com.

Coordination at Optimed Immunology

Treatment with Hizentra is initiated and monitored by Dr. McNeil. Prior authorizations are handled in-house — patients are not asked to navigate insurance approvals on their own. Administration logistics are coordinated by the office team based on the route of therapy and patient preference.
