Autoinflammatory / Periodic Fever Treatment (Anti-IL-1β) from Novartis.
Ilaris is an IL-1β monoclonal antibody approved for several hereditary periodic fever syndromes — including FMF, TRAPS, HIDS/MKD, and CAPS. By specifically blocking IL-1β, a key inflammatory cytokine driving periodic fever attacks, it can substantially reduce attack frequency and prevent the long-term complications of untreated autoinflammatory disease such as amyloidosis. Coordination with rheumatology is common for ongoing management.
Ilaris is FDA-approved for the following indications:
Ilaris is administered subcutaneously, with dosing frequency depending on the specific indication and patient response. Most patients receive injections every 4 to 8 weeks. Coordination with rheumatology is part of standard care.
The manufacturer offers a patient support program — Novartis Patient Assistance Now — that can help with insurance navigation, copay assistance for eligible patients, nursing support, and ongoing education. More information is available at https://www.pharma.us.novartis.com/patient-support.
Treatment with Ilaris is initiated and monitored by Dr. McNeil. Prior authorizations are handled in-house — patients are not asked to navigate insurance approvals on their own. This is a subcutaneous self-administered medication. After prior authorization, the prescription is sent to a specialty pharmacy that ships the medication directly to the patient. A manufacturer-sponsored nurse or office-based training visit is typically arranged for the first dose so patients are confident with self-administration before continuing at home.
A note on age: The FDA indications above may include pediatric or adolescent age groups. Optimed Immunology's clinical practice is focused on adults. If you are seeking care for a minor, please contact the office and we can advise on referral options.
